Football matches are a real institution here. Big or small, men or women, the football matches of the local club bring everyone together. The neighbourhood of San Mamés is packed! The lucky ones who have a place for the match go there beforehand to get into the mood before the whistle blows. For the less lucky, who didn't get a ticket, it doesn't stop them. They go to San Mamés to get into the atmosphere and watch the game in a bar around Poza.
A bit of history!
Athletic Club, commonly known as Athletic de Bilbao, is a Spanish football club from Bilbao founded in 1898. The club is unique in that its players are either born in the Basque Country, have Basque ancestry or were trained at a Basque club.
The club has been chaired since December 2018 by Aitor Elizegi.
The "new" stadium, inaugurated in 2013, is impressive! From the street it is already striking, but wait until you get inside! Goosebumps guaranteed.
Personally, I'm not a big football fan but someone advised me to, and I quote: "No one leaves Bilbao without going to see Athletic Bilbao play".
I followed the advice and I don't regret it.
I loved the experience and I recommend it 100%! The atmosphere in the stadium was just MAGIC!
