If you are visiting Bilbao or just passing through, you can't miss this architectural route.
The Concordia station
It is a mythical station in Bilbao that connects the city with Cantabria and the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula.
If you have ever had the chance to go to Belgium and more specifically to Antwerp, from the inside the Concordia station looks very similar. Coming from Belgium, this struck me immediately.
The skyscraper in Calle Bailén
The skyscraper in Calle Bailén has made history as the first building in Bilbao to exceed 40 metres in height. It was designed by the architect Manuel I.
It is located next to Concordia Station and Casco Viejo is on the other side of the river.
The Ribera Market
The Ribera de Bilbao market is located on the banks of the Ría de Bilbao, in the centre of Casco Viejo.
In 1990, the Ribera market was recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the most complete municipal food market and the largest covered market in Europe.
Today, both for its architecture and its food, the Ribera market is a must go in Bilbao.
The building has three floors offering a wide variety of foodstuffs. On the ground floor are the fish shops, on the first floor the butchers and delicatessens and on the second floor the fruit and vegetables.
There is also a floor dedicated to small bars that sell Pinxos. By the way, for those of you with a sweet tooth, you must try the Pinxos de la Ribera, they are delicious.
La Casa Montero
Casa Montero... a bit of Barcelona in the Basque Country.
It is almost one of the only modernist apartment buildings in Bilbao. It is called La Casa Gaudí de Bilbao because it is reminiscent of the Catalan architect's buildings.
